Blakehurst Dental – When only the pros will do

When disaster strikes, we understand the importance of being able to call on an empathetic professional for help. But also, the unpredictable nature of dental emergencies and the time critical nature of treatment mean you might need to see us ASAP. We approach any dental injury with compassion and clinical expertise and will always endeavour to see you as quickly as possible.

DENTAL OR FACIAL TRAUMA, OR AVULSED TEETH

This is a true dental emergency.

If you sustain a traumatic dental injury including an avulsed or lost tooth you must be treated as soon as possible to ensure the tooth’s nerve has the best chance of survival.

When an adult tooth is knocked out, try to clean the gum and gently rinse the root as quickly as possible, no longer than 10secs. If available at the time, replant the tooth into the socket. Alternatively make your way to the practice as soon as a possible for one of our dentists to replant the tooth back into the socket.

Make sure you store the tooth in the saliva (inside your mouth) or, if this is not possible, store the tooth in milk.

DENTAL ABSCESS OR FACIAL SWELLING

This is a true dental emergency.

If you notice any facial swelling, you must contact a dentist immediately. This is a clear sign that there is an active dental infection and can cause severe complications if this infection spreads beyond the facial tissues and spaces. If you notice you are feeling unwell, having difficulty swallowing or there is a hot red area on your face, please contact our receptions as soon as possible and we will always endeavour to see you that day.

WISDOM TOOTH PAIN

When wisdom teeth erupt, there should be only minor discomfort. However, some wisdom teeth can cause problems if there’s not enough room in the mouth. These impacted teeth can sometimes cause inflammation, swelling and pain in the gums. These teeth will need to be assessed by our dentists and if necessary, an extraction can be arranged.

BROKEN TOOTH

Although this is not a true dental emergency, we can understand the importance of having treatment as soon as possible for both aesthetic reconstructions of front teeth and to protect the tooth from bacterial ingress. We will always ensure we juggle our bookings to fit you in as soon as possible.

WHAT TO EXPECT

A thorough examination of the affected area will be carried out. Dental x-rays are often required to assess the problem and formulate an appropriate treatment plan and the dentist will carry out treatment to alleviate your pain and stabilise your dentition. Following this initial consult, it may be necessary to return in order to continue treatment to resolve this emergency issue.
